The 2020 Kāpiti Writers’ Retreat: A Recap

Thank you to everyone who was part of the 2020 Kāpiti Writers’ Retreat: our teaching writers – Catherine Chidgey, Chris Tse, Helen Lehndorf, Kerry Lane, Paddy Richardson and Pip Desmond  – our volunteers and of course our participants!

Over two days the group of writers immersed themselves into intensive morning workshops, lively afternoon discussions and enjoyed the space to write, relax at the beautiful grounds at El Rancho on the Kāpiti Coast.

Apart from honing their craft under the guidance of inspirational practitioners the retreat offered the chance to meet like minded people and hear a wide range of writing and voices from the participants at the open mike sessions.

Here is some feedback we have received from this year’s Kāpiti Writers’ Retreat participants.

“I’m feeling energised and refreshed. My contact with other writers is mainly virtual and online – it was so much fun to spend a couple of days with my tribe talking about writing and nothing else. The food and accommodation were great, and the setting was lovely” – Helen

“My time at Kahini proved that the total is greater than the sum of the parts. Collaboration provided a depth that is hard to find alone.  I am a better writer for having attended.” Liz Homes

“The chance to write in peaceful surroundings, attend fantastic workshops to hone your craft, and the opportunity to meet other writers is a wonderful opportunity and I highly recommend it.” Rachel

“The Kāpiti Writer’s retreat came at just the right time for me and I’ve left the weekend feeling refreshed and inspired to finish my short story collection. I met many amazing writers and everyone was friendly, welcoming and generous in sharing their work and knowledge.” Renée Boyer

“The retreat was awesome! It was well run, well organised and inspiring. I greatly appreciated Pip Desmond’s sharing of her knowledge and experience in such a generous and inclusive way. Her workshops gave me much needed insight into an area of writing I’ve struggled with. Thank you, Pip and the Kāpiti Writers’ Retreat.” Fleur Beale

“Thanks for bringing together such a diverse and talented group of writers to share their knowledge and experience.  I am very much a novice and it was both slightly daunting and incredibly inspiring.”

“The Kāpiti writers’ retreat is a weekend to remember. There is a reason people keep going back! It was well worth travelling from Auckland to attend. Many thanks Kirsten and team.”

“What can I say, I certainly got my money’s worth. Excellent selection of workshops.”

“A chance to let go of life for a while and be a writer!”

Dates for the 2021 retreat will be announced shortly. Sign up to our newsletter to keep updated and check out the Kāpiti series for workshops held during the year.
