Please note: all residencies are full, with waiting lists, until our July 26-August 1, 2020 residency. Registration for that residency will open this July 26, 2019.

Live and write among the hibiscus, plumeria, and sunsets of the Garden Isle. Open to writers across all genres, the Kaua’i Writing Residencies are a gentle blend of personal writing time and the option to visit and write with other residents, set amidst the beauty and tranquility of Kaua’i’s south shore.

How It Works

1. Book by contacting writing@kahini.org and we’ll be in touch within twenty-four hours. Where we stay: one-bedroom condos and two-bedroom condos.
2. Once we’re two months out from your residency start date, you’ll begin to receive arrival and logistics emails as you prepare for arrival.
3. You arrive at the airport in Līhu’e on your residency start date!

We do airport pickups/dropoffs; you only have to rent a car if you want to explore the rest of the island. (Recommended, but not necessary.)

During the week itself, you have the option to join morning and evening writing times and gatherings where we get together to talk about writing and enjoy great conversation. But your residency time is your own: for reading, for writing, for being.

Because you have an entire unit all to yourself, it’s also perfect for writers who want to come with a spouse/partner, as well as for writers looking for a solo retreat.

Our Home On Kaua’i

kapa'a day
Live and write on the Garden Isle

Po’ipū is a small residential community located on the sunny southern shore of Kaua’i, about a half-hour southwest from the airport at Lihue. Good coffee, grocery stores, and restaurants are available in multiple locations.

Mornings
Each morning, optional guided freewrites help us loosen our writing muscles and get words on the page. As part of our freewriting, we look at short samples of work by such writers as James Baldwin, Ashapoorna Devi, Mahasweta Devi, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Goretti Kyomuhendo, Katherine Mansfield, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Rabindranath Tagore, and Virginia Woolf. Handouts are provided.

Afternoons
In one of the most beautiful and inspiring locations on earth, spend your afternoons writing or enjoying the best of what Kaua’i has to offer, including playing on the beach or water; discovering the history, culture, and natural beauty of Kaua’i; or reading and writing at good restaurants and cafes.

Evenings
During the week we have evening gatherings for you to attend as you see fit, spending some quality literary time with the other residents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to rent a car?
You don’t need to rent a car, as we do airport pick-up and drop-offs, and there is enough on the south shore to keep you busy for a week. However, many residents find that having a car allows them to explore the rest of the island (which we also recommend) so it depends on how, personally, you want to spend your week on Kaua’i.

Are meals included?
Because each resident has their own unique dietary needs, we do not provide food. Each residence comes with a fully equipped kitchen, and there are a number of grocery stores and restaurants nearby. For those using our airport pick-up and drop-off, we are happy to take you a grocery store once during the week, on the first Monday afternoon of the residency week.

Host

Jordan Hartt jordan copyis the author of the story collections “Leap” and “Drifting,” both on Tebot Bach Press.

My lifework is in creating experiences where people find the craft instruction to reach for their best writing, find the community to connect meaningfully across backgrounds, and find the lifelong inspiration of the writing life.

To do this, I facilitate the Olympia Writing Center; host annual writing residencies in Po’ipū, Kaua’i; Kolkata, India; and Kampala, Uganda; and give as a philanthropist to artists and visionaries around the world. I’m currently working on a new book.
