Please note: all residency dates are sold out, with waiting lists, through April 26-May 2, 2020. Bookings are currently available for April 2020 only.

Live and write among the hibiscus, plumeria, and sunsets of the Garden Isle. Open to writers across all genres, the Kaua’i Writing Residencies are a gentle blend of personal writing time and the option to visit and write with other residents, set amidst the beauty and tranquility of Kaua’i’s south shore.

How It Works

1. Book through making a deposit at the bottom of this page and we’ll be in touch within twenty-four hours to confirm your space.
2. Once we’re nine months away from your residency start date, we get in contact so you can select your exact one-bedroom residence or two-bedroom residence. Thanks to donor support, we cover half the cost for whatever specific villa you select. Once we’re three months out from your residency start date, you’ll start to receive arrivals and logistics emails, one each month for a total of three, as you prepare for arrival.
3. You arrive at the airport in Līhu’e on your residency start date!

We do airport pickups/dropoffs; you only have to rent a car if you want to explore the rest of the island. (Recommended, but not necessary.)

During the week itself, you have the option to join morning and evening writing times and gatherings where we get together to talk about writing and enjoy great conversation. But your residency time is your own: for reading, for writing, for being.

Because you have an entire unit all to yourself, it’s also perfect for writers who want to come with a spouse/partner, as well as for writers looking for a solo retreat.

Our Home On Kaua’i

kapa'a day
Live and write in paradise

Po’ipū is a small residential community located on the sunny southern shore of Kaua’i, about a half-hour southwest from the airport at Lihue. Good coffee, grocery stores, and restaurants are available in multiple locations.

Mornings
Each morning, optional guided freewrites help us loosen our writing muscles and get words on the page.

Afternoons
In one of the most beautiful and inspiring locations on earth, spend your afternoons writing or enjoying the best of what Kaua’i has to offer, including playing on the beach or water; discovering the history, culture, and natural beauty of Kaua’i; or reading and writing at good restaurants and cafes.

Evenings
During the week we have evening gatherings for you to attend as you see fit, spending some quality literary time with the other residents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to rent a car?
You don’t need to rent a car, as we do airport pick-up and drop-offs, and there is enough on the south shore to keep you busy for a week. However, many residents find that having a car allows them to explore the rest of the island (which we also recommend) so it depends on how, personally, you want to spend your week on Kaua’i.

How are the total fees calculated?
There are options for a variety of budgets. Once you select your specific residence (above), we get on the phone with you to take the total cost of that residence (the rental fee plus the cleaning, insurance, and processing fees, and Hawai’i state taxes) and divide it by half. We cover half, and your contribution is half. Your total cost will generally be between $1,000 and $1,750, depending on which residency you select, but you decide. We do all this by phone so that you can select the exact residence that best fits your needs. All your residency fees are fully refundable up to two months out.

Are meals included?
Because each resident has their own unique dietary needs, we do not provide food. Each residence comes with a fully equipped kitchen, and there are a number of grocery stores and restaurants nearby. For those using our airport pick-up and drop-off, we are happy to take you a grocery store once during the week!

Where do the central gatherings happen?
Our morning freewrites and evening gatherings happen at the Po’ipū Kapili villas. No matter where you stay on the south shore, you’re only a beautiful fifteen-minute walk or about a four-minute drive from Po’ipū Kapili.
