Based in downtown Olympia at the Abigail Stuart House and Browsers Bookshop, the Olympia Writing Center is designed for beginning, emerging, and established writers, and provides ongoing writing workshops, gatherings, and other events.

Since our inception in 2014, Kahini participants have published over three thousand individual times in literary magazines; released over two hundred books; been featured in the Best American Essays, Best American Poetry, Best American Short Stories, and Best American Science & Nature Writing anthologies; been shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African Writing; won New Zealand’s Best First Book Award, and won multiple other awards, fellowships, and full university professorships in creative writing. The Olympia Writing Center is designed to bring this success and ongoing inspiration into one place, year-round.

But the true north of our Center is not publication but the development of personal writing craft, the community of like-minded folks, and the ongoing inspiration of the writing life.

Facilitator

Jordan Hartt jordan copyis the author of the story collections “Leap” and “Drifting,” both on Tebot Bach Press.

My lifework is in creating experiences where people find the craft instruction to reach for their best writing, find the community to connect meaningfully across backgrounds, and find the lifelong inspiration of the writing life.

To do this, I facilitate The Art of Fiction; host annual writing residencies in Po’ipū, Kaua’i; Kolkata, India; and Kampala, Uganda; and give as a philanthropist to artists and visionaries around the world. I’m currently working on a new book.
