Based in downtown Olympia at the Abigail Stuart House and Browsers Bookshop, the Olympia Writing Center provides ongoing writing workshops, language classes, cultural exchange programs, and public readings and performances.

Since our inception in 2014, Kahini participants have published over three thousand individual times in literary magazines; released over two hundred books; been featured in the Best American Essays, Best American Poetry, Best American Short Stories, and Best American Science & Nature Writing anthologies; been shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African Writing; and won New Zealand’s Best First Book Award, and won multiple other awards, fellowships, and full university professorships in creative writing.

But the true north of our Center is not publication but the development of personal writing craft, the community of like-minded folks, and the ongoing inspiration of the writing life.

Language Classes

Language classes at the Olympia Writing Center, including the teaching and learning of English as an additional language, bring master language teachers together with ardent students in classes focused on immersing yourself in another language. All are focused on the craft of language-learning, the community of language-learning, and the ongoing inspiration of language-learning, for a lifetime.

Writing Workshops

Writing workshops at the Olympia Writing Center bring master faculty together with ardent students. Some workshops take place as day-long Saturday workshops, others take place over a series of evenings. All are focused on the craft of writing, the community of writing, and the ongoing inspiration of the writing life, for a lifetime.

Cultural Exchange

Kahini is a global literary-arts organization with events happening in New Zealand, India, and Uganda, as well as the United States. As part of the Center’s programming, artists from these areas will visit Olympia frequently, sharing their art and their cultural backgrounds with us. Also as part of this program, OWC members have opportunities to travel to the Kāpiti Coast of New Zealand; the city of Kolkata, India; and the city of Kampala, Uganda, to attend writing residencies in these areas.

A key aspect of this Center is the inclusion of the tremendous diversity of Latin-American voices, cultures, and rich literary traditions of Latin America from the U.S. to México to Chile, as faculty and participants. In addition, thanks to strong relationships with Native Puget Sound communities, many workshops, performances, and other events will be planned, staffed, and guided by Native faculty. Stay tuned for more information as the course offerings are updated later this month.

Readings & Performances

Experience the public presentations of our faculty, participants, and exchange partners! Readings and performances at the Olympia Writing Center serve as the public culmination of our workshops and classes, as well as the chance to bring the broader public into the OWC community. In addition, these readings and performances offer our participants the chance to share their voices, hone their delivery and presentation, and make new discoveries in their own work.

Facilitator

Jordan Hartt jordan copyis the author of the story collections “Leap” and “Drifting,” both on Tebot Bach Press.

My lifework is in creating experiences where people find the craft instruction to reach for their best writing, find the community to connect meaningfully across backgrounds, and find the lifelong inspiration of the writing life, including the Olympia Writing Center’s high-level writing workshops, language classes, cultural exchange programs, and readings and performances here in our area.

To do this, I facilitate the Center; host annual writing residencies in Po’ipū, Kaua’i; Kolkata, India; and Kampala, Uganda; and give as a philanthropist to artists and visionaries around the world. I’m currently working on a new book.
